Best Natural Deodorants That Work – Pit Tested

Talking about armpits is a tricky business. Your approach to your deodorants may most likely consist of heading to the drugstore and picking up the best-smelling or best-looking deodorant on sale.

Did you know that your armpits absorb 100% of what you put onto them? It doesn’t help that your gorgeous smelling deodorant is most likely laden with harmful chemicals and aluminum is one of the most common red flags. Over time these chemicals build up in the armpit glands and breast tissue and have been linked to the likes of cancer and metal toxicity, so you could be eating the healthiest diet on earth, but if you use chemical filled toiletries, (the average person uses atleast 9 products everyday), you are filling your body with all the nasties you are trying to rid of with your diet. If that wasn’t enough, many chemical deodorants are from companies that still indulge in animal testing.

Rubbing a potential carcinogen on your body every day is a little worrying and its time you paid more attention to your deodorant.

We have rounded up 3 staff members and asked them to handpick clean and effective natural deodorants on the market for a test-drive. They’ve done their part and helped us put together this list of best natural deodorants that will leave your pits fresh, healthy and toxin free. They are cruelty-free and vegan too. From creams and sprays to sticks and roll-ons that smoothly glide into the skin, there is sure to be one that will work with you.

Soapwalla Cream deodorant

Why we like? Wholesome natural ingredients {that might be even edible}, effective, little goes a long way, and easily available in most organic or green beauty stores.

Soapwalla Deodorant - Best Natural Deodorant That Works - Organic Deodorant

Both alcohol and aluminum free, this deodorant cream from Brooklyn-based Soapwalla is one of the most popular vegan and natural deodorants around the world. You can find it on the beauty shelves from New York to Paris, Dubai to London and Sydney to Singapore with ease. We love that its formulated with organic vegetable powders, shea butter, essential oils and clays and keeps the pits dry, fresh and nicely scented without inhibiting the body’s ability to expel toxins (we don’t believe in antiperspirants because blocking your sweat glands is not healthy).

We first discovered this brand in Paris, a few years back, and have been hooked ever since. Its waxy balm gives you an effortless application and quick absorption without leaving any stains. Although two of our girls found the formula a little gritty but they didn’t mind it as much. Suitable for the most sensitive of skin, this organic deo cream contains no parabens, alcohol, petroleum, GMOs, BPA’s, aluminum salts or any other nasties. The ingredients are clean enough that you can actually eat this deo {figuratively}.

Safe for? Their deodorant cream can be safely used on sensitive skin, during pregnancy, breastfeeding or during and after cancer treatment (look for the sensitive skin option that’s also baking soda free).

Cons? Some may find this deodorant a little expensive (~$20) – but don’t worry we have some pocket-friendly options too on this list.

Meow Meow Tweet Deodorant

Why we like? Super cute packaging, natural and clean ingredients, baking soda free options that’ll work perfectly for those with underarm sensitivity.

Meow Meow Tweet Natural Deodorant Lavendar - Best Natural Deodorants - Effective Vegan Deodorants

This natural and organic deodorant cream glides smoothly and melts on the skin upon contact (courtesy coconut oil) leaving your underarms fresh without the irritating baking soda that’s commonly found in most natural deodorants. Their clean formula is made with plant and mineral powders, fragrant essential oils and natural moisturizing agents like shea butter and coconut oil.

Meow Meow Tweet deodorants are handcrafted in small batches in Brooklyn and come in a choice of deodorant cream pot and a deodorant stick {if you don’t like greasing your fingers and rubbing it on your pit}. We found it worked pretty well from day-to-night, requiring just one-time reapplication when we were running around outdoors for too long.

Why we love Meow Meow, even more, is because of their cool cutesy packaging that’s also 100% biodegradable – it composts within 1 year.

Safe for? Sensitive skin, pregnant women or those with skin problems

Cons? For those who have a major sweating problem, this may not be the best choice considering the coconut oil base, which may make you feel too sweaty. Go for natural spray deodorants instead that you can also easily reapply. If you have sensitive skin, avoid their baking soda deodorants.

Black Chicken Remedies Axilla Deodorant

What we like? The heavenly spicy smell and its super gentle formula that doesn’t sting at all.

Black Chicken Remedies Axilla Deodorant Vegan - Best Natural Deodorants

A friend of ours got us a jar of the Black Chicken Remedies deodorant from his Australia holiday (along with other vegan organic goodies from the land of nature) and it’s clearly our favorite. We tested this on flights, long bike rides, Bikram yoga, early-morning to midnight gigs and it never failed to keep the pits fresh. Its blend of organic plant-based ingredients not only soothes the skin but also absorbs the moisture thanks to arrowroot and kaolin clay. Its beautiful mix of clove, cedarwood and citrus essential oils smells heavenly, and while it won’t keep you completely away from sweating, you would definitely stay fresh and smell divine.

Free from parabens, aluminum, alcohol, palm oil, parabens, and any other nasties you can think of, this organic cream deodorant does the job of keeping BO at bay to perfection! The best part? It doesn’t sting even if you apply it right after shaving.

Cons? Except maybe the price, we can’t think of any.

Some of us only prefer spray as stink stoppers because everything else is just too messy or inconvenient. While we found the deodorant cream formula the most effective, you can find good natural deodorant sprays too. Here are our favorites!

Aēsop Herbal Spray Deodorant

What we like? Sophisticated scent and packaging, lasts long and fuss-free spray with clean ingredients.

Aesop Natural Deodorant - Best Natural Deodorant That Works

This Australian skincare brand has received a cult status for their amazing range of clean products that bring the best of nature and science in clean yet appealingly austere packaging. Most natural deodorants are infamous for their ineffective results, but this one actually works {it’s not entirely natural but its clean}. No doubt it is one of the most popular deos among our girls too!

It has a pleasant sophisticated smell {gravitating towards natural and herbal}, comes in a brown glass bottle and combines natural antibacterial ingredients like lemongrass, coriander, tea-tree, thyme, clove and witch hazel to ward off the smell. The spray quickly absorbs into the skin and lasts longer than most natural spray deodorants.

Cons? The only downside we found was that it is on an expensive side.

Aubrey Calendula Deodorant Spray

Why we like? Crafted from natural ingredients, doesn’t leave stains and is light on the wallet.

Aubrey Organics Calendula Blossom Deodorant - Best Natural Deodorant Spray

We had our doubt about the sweat-wicking capability of this natural deodorant, but we were pleasantly surprised with results. While it may not work for our Bikram yoga gig, it does the job quite well on a normal routine and stayed through after a moderate-workout too. It leaves no white marks, has clean natural ingredients to ward off the bacteria and the essential oils of sandalwood, patchouli, jasmine, vanilla, cedarwood and rose leave a nice scent.

Its free from synthetic colorants, scents or preservatives, propylene glycol, aluminum, parabens, triclosan and is formulated with natural ingredients including essential oils.

Cons? It has a faint hint of baby powder (it’s the calamine), that may not sit well with many and contains natural grain alcohol. Sniff before you buy.

We also like EO Organic Deodorant Spray in Lavender, especially because it is only $4.5

Green People Rosemary & Prebiotics Deodorant

They also have a deodorant for men that comes in slick black packaging!

Kiss My Face Liquid Rock Roll On Deodorant

What we like? Simple, fuss-free mineral formula that works great even when you are working out.

Kiss My Face Liquid Rock Natural Deodorant

For heavy-duty days this roll-on deodorant is your best bet. It glides on clear and is fragrance-free, leaving you with a weightless feel that doesn’t leave a sticky residue. The willow bark and mineral salts fight any foul aromas at bay even after your workout.

Free from aluminum chlorhydrate, parabens, propylene glycol and verified as gluten-free, its also free from animal products and not tested on animals.

Cons? It doesn’t have a fragrance per se. May not work for pregnant women or those with super sensitive skin because of the mineral salts and absence of a soothing ingredient in the mix.

Deodorant Powders

They’re too messy and fail to deliver the long-lasting freshness you’d expect from a deodorant. We gave the Lush deodorant powder a try and were only left disappointed.

Weleda Deodorant Spray

We were quite excited when we got a bottle of their wild rose deodorant but were disappointed at the result. It was more like a body freshener than a deodorant that would quickly disappear and stopped doing its job in just under 2 hours. We really wanted to like this – the cool glass bottle would have looked slick in the bathroom cabinet.

A warning: When you switch from a chemical-laden antiperspirant to a natural deodorant, your body needs some transition time to adjust – aka your pits will need to detoxify. Some of you may, like our girl Alicia, need to reapply the deodorant 2-3 times a day as your skin will unclog, but be patient as this will diminish once the body adjusts.

P.S. The natural deodorants will not work as flawlessly as the ones packed with chemicals, but they do the job quite well and you may need some adjustment period to understand how {and how frequently} to use them. But hey, health is far more important than smell – so give them a try!

What about crystal deodrants like “Pitrok”and “Magical Ice Crystals”. Both are 100% Potassium Alum
