34 Natural & Vegan Sunscreens For All Skin Types + Sunscreen Guide

Best Natural and Vegan Sunscreens - Best Waterproof sunscreen - organic sunscreen - Best sensitive skin sunscreen - sunscreen for kids - Non toxic Natural sunscreen

When it comes to sunscreens there are a lot of questions and options – how important it is to wear sunscreen, when and how much sunscreen to apply, how often should I reapply, can I stay in sun for longer if I have used sunscreen, and what should I look for when buying a sunscreen?

It is very important to understand the basics before you head out in the heat. To make the task easier for you we asked skin experts everything you need to know about sunscreens. Plus, we’ve done a thorough research and picked the best natural vegan sunscreens that won’t give you a ghost face or make you break out. Read on to find out more.

Sunscreens are not just for beaches, by the pool or summertime. Leading doctors and skin experts have time and again highlighted the importance of sunscreen as an integral part of everyone’s daily skin care routine. “Sunscreen is vital for the prevention of skin cancer and should be used daily. Large studies show that the regular use of sunscreen has been proven to reduce the incidence of skin cancer”, says Dr. Kally Papantoniou, a Cosmetic Dermatologist certified by the American Board of Dermatology.

Without sunscreen your skin is unprotected and vulnerable to potential damage including premature aging, (think wrinkles and sagging skin), discoloration, dark spots, sunburns and even skin cancer. This means your skin needs sunscreen during the daytime all year round whether it is sunny, cloudy or the middle of winters.

Most of you probably already know this but you still give your sunscreen a miss because
the most common reaction to sunscreen is a general “dislike”.  You find it either ‘loaded with chemicals’, ‘itchy and irritating on skin’, ‘too greasy’, ‘smelly’ or ‘simply impractical’ as it leaves a white cast on the skin or peels off in white streaks’.

Sunscreen Tips - Best natural and vegan sunscreens - When to apply sunscreen - sunscreen spf - safe sunscreen - organic sunscreen

Sunscreens from mainstream brands often contain artificial fragrances and many synthetic chemicals, in addition to animal ingredients, that you would definitely want to shy away from. Dr. Kally Papantoniou says, “Chemical sunscreens are not as stable, and some can be irritating to sensitive skin. Physical blockers such as zinc and titanium are relatively harmless, and are more stable as UV filters. I recommend using sunscreens that contain zinc as a primary ingredient for best coverage and least amount of skin irritation”. Even professor of dermatology David Hershthal at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine agrees. He says, “Zinc oxide, a physical blocker, is the only ingredient you need for excellent broad-spectrum protection.”

The good thing about the “natural” brands is that their sun protection formulas contain minerals like zinc oxide and titanium dioxide that lie on the surface of the skin and work by reflecting UV radiation off the skin like a mirror rather than absorbing the harmful sun’s rays. Plus, they also swap the synthetic ingredients with skin-friendly plant extracts and essential oils, which doubles as a skincare. So when you have natural and safe sunblock alternatives, why would you want to put your health to risk with sunscreens with toxic ingredients?

The problem with many natural brands is that their sunscreens often comes in a thick formula, because of minerals, that can be greasy and leave stains on your clothes. Moreover, they often are low factor sunscreens aka they don’t have SPFs of more than 30. However, you must also know that sunscreens with higher factors don’t provide much more protection against UVB radiation. For example, an SPF15 sunscreen filters out 93% of UVB radiation, while an SPF30 sunscreen filters out 96%.

Note: SPF stands for ‘sun protection factor’. It relates to the amount of time you can spend in the sun before you get burnt.

Having said that, in the quest for the perfect sunscreen that’s devoid of harmful chemicals and that doesn’t leave a white cast on the skin you may end up wasting hundreds of dollars and some collateral damage on your skin. Luckily we’ve done the research for you and have rounded up a list of effective and safe vegan sunscreens.

Ilia Sheer Vivid Tinted Moisturizer

Despite the high concentration of zinc oxide (12%) for sun protection, Ilea’s tinted moisturizer with an SPF of 20 feels extremely light and spreads easily giving the dull skin a healthy glow. The sheer tinted formula comes in six different shades that veils your blemishes giving you a natural looking even skin tone. This lightweight moisturizer with a semi-matte finish gives you a radiant skin that looks dewy and fresh and is most importantly, protected from the sun.

This natural formula uses 38% organic ingredients and is infused with beneficial hydrators and skin calmers like aloe vera, white tea and rosemary. But considering all the pros of the products we’d ignore this minor gripe.

It’s perfect sunscreen for office dwellers or those with indoor activities because even if you don’t plan to step outside, your skin still needs sun protection from the rays that penetrates inside.

True Naturals Neutral Unscented Sunscreen

This True Natural sunscreen has the top rating from EWG on safety scale for its clean healthy ingredients.  This fragrance free formula a high concentration of the zinc oxide (22.5) and titanium dioxide (6%), a duo that’s offers the safest protection against both UVA and UVB rays.  However, this high content of minerals means it will leave some white cast on application, but proper blending and topping it with a tinted cream or finishing powder will offset this effect. The natural sunscreen formula contains a good mix of antioxidants and hydrators like green tea, shea butter, coconut oil and Vitamin E and is best for those with normal, combination and dry skin.

There’s a lot to love about this sunscreen but we’re on fence about the misleading claim that it is ‘formulated for those even with most sensitive skin or those prone to skin allergies’. This sunscreen contains eucalyptus oil, which is a well-known skin irritant and is in fact considered unsafe for children and pregnant women.

What we like: Cruelty-free, biodegradable, alcohol-free, EWG top rated; free from methylparaben, butylparaben, ethylparaben, propylparaben, dimethicone, polymers, bht, formaldehyde, synthetic fragrance, synthetic colors, mineral oil, petrolatum, triethanolamine, mercury, cadmium, and other heavy metals.

Cons: Not safe for sensitive skin as advertised. Contains eucalyptus oil, potential irritant for sensitive skin and not safe for children and pregnant women

True Naturals Neutral Unscented Sunscreen SPF 50 for $23.99 (3.4 z)

Sunology Sunscreen for Face SPF 50

It’s one of the top rated sunscreens among all ethical bodies including EWG and is most likely to show up on the list of all natural and non-toxic sunscreen list. Technically this sunscreen has everything right – fragrance-free, gentle mineral formula, natural and organic non-toxic ingredients, biodegradable, water resistant, high SPF, fragrance-free and safe for sensitive skin. Plus, its super concentrated formula follows the mantra – ‘a little goes a long way’.

We would have been convinced if we only looked at the product’s technicalities. The problem is that although we so much want to like this amazing sunscreen, we can’t force ourselves to a product that’s very heavy, leaves a noticeable white cast on the skin and stains on whatever your skin comes in contact with. Don’t get us wrong, we know all mineral formulas with zinc oxide and/or titanium oxide will be naturally thick and white. In fact, it is this consistency and color that provides physical skin protection by reflecting rather than absorbing UV rays. But then there are ways to mitigate the whiteness and improve the consistency, which this product does not do very successfully.

However, if you have a troubled skin, the white cast doesn’t bother you and you need a great non-toxic sunscreen then this is the one for you!

Having said that, we’d still give its Natural Body Sunscreen with SPF 50 a thumbs up, especially for swimming, sports and other outdoor activities. It is one of the best ones in the market. Just dab a quarter sized amount and rub it well before you step out. The whiteness disappears on the body in a few minutes, if blended properly.

What we like: Free from oxybenzone, avobenzone, octisalate, homosalate, PABA, chemical preservatives or parabens

Sunology Natural Sunscreen for Face SPF 50 for $14.99 (2 oz)

Derma e Antioxidant Natural Oil-Free Face Lotion SPF 30

A great non-toxic oil-free mineral sunscreen formula that’s also fragrance-free and hence suitable for even sensitive skin.

The biggest issue with this amazing sunscreen is the chalky gothic face it leaves upon application, thanks to zinc oxide. The problem is no matter how many safe and natural ingredients are included in the product or how effective the SPF is, if it leaves a white cast most people would shy away from using it every day or at all. Nevertheless, the many good points of this sunscreen still makes it a top rated sunscreens and it’s fans have learnt their ways to work around the white cast it leaves – they apply the required amount and rub it well. Then top it off with a setting powder to even out and dissipate the cast. Plus, it’s a great sunscreen to be worn under makeup – as the white layer will not be noticeable at all while the oil-free SPF lotion will set the right canvas for your foundation.

It’s best for normal, combination, slightly dry and sensitive skin; folks with oily skin should give this a miss.

What we like: Hypoallergenic, non-irritating, sensitivity tested, fragrance-free, paraben-free, gluten-free, GMO-free. The company follows environmental friendly practices

Cons: Leaves a prominent white cast

But remember sunscreen is no excuse to step out in sun or getting a tan. Dr Kally says “Some people apply sunscreen and then lay out in the sun, and the sunscreen will help prevent the sunburn; but if you are looking to prevent skin cancer and photodamage do not lay out”. So try to avoid sun exposure as much as you can (for your vitamin D requirement 15-minutes sun exposure between 10am-12pm is sufficient). When you do step out in the sun, make sure to cover your body with proper clothing as much as you can as it guards your skin even better than sunscreen.

It is essential that you apply sunscreen atleast 20 minutes before stepping out in the sun. “Applying sunscreen before going outside is helpful because this allows for the sunscreen to set on the skin before and sweating has occurred, which can impede the sunscreen from staying on the skin. Make sure to apply an even layer all over, not forgetting the ears. People often forget to reapply every 2 hours, or when they come out of the water. Sunscreen is not effective if it has been sweat off, or washed off, so don’t forget to reapply”, recommends Dr. Kally.
