Spring is almost there, which means it’s time to get your digits summer ready for beach bumming, summer fests, pool parties and sundown soirees. After long frigid days, we’re excited to shed some layers and show off those nails that had been hiding under those boots and gloves. Creamy pastels, sophisticated nudes, almost blacks and metallics have been hugely popular on and off the runway and are an easy way to lend your outfit edgy vibes or a touch of elegance.
Before you swipe your card, you need to make sure you are buying the right kind of polishes. Your beautifully packaged favorite nail polish might have hidden ingredients that can wreak havoc on your health.
In case you didn’t know already, nail polish is one of the most toxic beauty products, and most mainstream brands are full of harmful chemicals like toluene, DBP, TPHP (triphenyl phosphate) and formaldehyde/formaldehyde resin associated with serious health issues and are potentially carcinogenic. No wonder your nails are turning brittle and yellow over the years. None of these nail polishes use ingredients from animal origin like carmine (animal dye) or fish scales that are most commonly found in your nail polish. Even popular brands like OPI, Chanel, Christian Louboutin, YSL, Essie, Revlon have them.
Fortunately, you don’t have to risk your health for a manicure as there are so many clean, natural, non-toxic and vegan nail polish brands out there. These brands have a range of beautiful shades from pastel cremes, metallic, iridescent to dark, bright and shimmer and they don’t disappoint on delivery as their results are just as good, sometimes even better, than the chemical loaded lacquers. High shine, long lasting, chip resistant, gel-effect – yes you got it all!
We’ve rounded up Spring Summer 2017’s hottest nail colors from vegan-friendly, non-toxic nail polish brands, and also added some easy nail art ideas so your next manicure can be toxic and headache-free.
VEGAN NAIL POLISH MUST-HAVES FOR SUMMER 2017
A deep blue perfectly complements summer’s sun-kissed bronze skin. Good news is blue is ruling this season and we’re pretty sure it will easily transition for winter months thereafter. Style and sustainability salute!
Our pick: Oh Tiffany Deep Ultra Marine
Style tip: Shape your nails in squoval and color block this blue with a punchy red (Oh Tiff I Slay) to paint your nails in half moon backward French. It looks super luxe and is just perfect for your summer parties. Hamptons here we come!
You are the sunshine
Sunshine and creamy yellows are best hues for the sunny days. They cheer up not only the mood but also your outfit. A simple white dress against bright yellow will not fail to look fabulous!
Our pick: Pastel Pop with Sparitual Sol (pastel yellow creme for $12) or ella+mila Wheels on the Bus (sunshine yellow for $7)
Style tip: The best way to wear this color is on its own, but if you must then take inspiration from Jeremy Scott’s Spring Summer 2017 runway on how to wear your bright yellow digits.
The Spring Summer 2017 runways had an interesting take on metallics for this season. Instead of painting all gold – the nails were painted in nudes and accentuated in the outer corner of the nails with gold – like Rodarte. It not only looks cool but also very chic and luxe. We’re definitely wearing this all season!
Our pick: 10-Free Kester Black Frizzy Logic Nail Polish ($18 each)
Style tip: When your nail color chips and you don’t have time to change the polish, color block it with this gorgeous gold by painting it vertically just on the tips to camouflage the chipping. Then wait for some complements on your plush nail art.
La La Land is the talk of the moment and what can be better than a nail color that gives us a La La happy feeling? We love the icy skyish pastel blue from vegan nail polish brand Benecos. The creamy blue is a perfect combo of light and subtle yet preppy and pretty.
Our pick: Benecos Ice Ice Baby ($12.75)
Style Tip: This gorgeous color can be worn on its on, or color blocked with other nudes from the list for a summer-perfect manicure.
Nudes are perfect and a must for every season and when everything looks too bright and loud, a slick nude paint on your nails will put everything back in perspective. We personally think it is the sexiest colour complimenting every skin tone and always looks chic and classy.
Our picks: Lauren B Beauty Nude No. 2 or Oh Tiff ‘Undress Me’ Set of 4 Vegan Nude Nail Polish ($35)
Style tip: Wearing this solo will look best, and when you want to add a pop of color, you can do diagonal half-and-half with a gorgeous orange (Oh Tiff Terracota Vines).
Beat the sun
A sexy orange is a must haves in your beauty cabinet – it flatters every skin tone (Especially a sunkissed skin) and looks chic no matter the occasion.
Our pick: Oh Tiff Terracota Vines (set of 3 Summer Colors for $29.99)
Style tip: Paint half nude half orange horizontally on index and ring finger and the rest solid red for a simple chic look.
Sizzle in Pink
What would a summer be without a sizzling pink manicure? Get this perfect pink hue to make everything look so plush this summer.
Our pick: NCLA What’s Your Sign – Cancer (for $14.99)
Style tip: It’s so gorgeous that we’ll wear it all season on it’s own, color blocked with foam green and minty blues and work some kick-ass nail art inspired by geometry for head-turning attention!
Bring the beach
If you can’t go to the beach, we say let’s get the beach to you. This happy minty blue is huge this season and the best part it that it looks divine on every nail type – short, long, round, square or in-between.
Style tip: We like to keep things simple, but Thom Browne‘s color blocking style will work just as well for us.
Hot and high
Summer or winter, no one can beat the power of a gorgeous red. Equal parts stylish and sexy this perfect shade of red is as pool-lounge perfect as they come.
Our pick: Oh Tiff I Slay Vegan Nail Polish
Style tip: Take the nautical route by wearing this red with nude in the style of Rebecca Minkoff‘s Spring Summer 2017 runway looks.
The almost black hue is huge this summer as it is not only edgy but also sophisticated.
Our pick: SpaRitual I Feel The Earth Move Mini ($7)
Style tip: Color block any warm paints on this list with this gorgeous hue for immediate luxe effect. We do diagonal half-and-half as not only it looks super stylish but it is also easy to achieve at home without spending extra bucks in a salon.
